more saab distractions.

this is just too beautiful not to watch.  i came across this while searching for something else (sadly, also not school-related), and although it's a bit old, i find it all fascinating...

spring break, part 2

lovely dresses from the victoria and albert museum!

it's too bad so many of the pictures came out blurry...methinks i should invest in a nice new camera.

day dress, 1836-40

the detailing around the top reminds me of some of emily blunt's dresses in the young victoria!

somebody should wear this to the oscars...

i loooove all the cool detailing. especially at the hem.

i love the back!

hmm, it looks pink in the picture from the v&a website...

spring break, part 1

movies i got to see during spring break:

AN EDUCATION - wow, carey mulligan was brilliant! (and that guy super creepy...)  and while the plot managed to be frustrating enough, it wasn't one of those "downer" movies.  the ending was actually pretty satisfying.  too bad the player on the airplane was kind of broken so the sound kept on blipping on and off for the first hour.

oh, and the costumes...i would wear half those dresses if i could...there's an interesting blog about it here.

THE GLORIOUS 39 - quite the thriller! kept me on the edge of my seat...

NEW MOON - this time it wasn't even laughable.  i felt like punching bella in the face.  and the end...what was that??!

THE YOUNG VICTORIA - the best! because even though an education left me satisfied, it didn't leave me particularly happy...well, not like the young victoria made me happy at the end, because it's sad thinking about how albert dies relatively young.  still, emily blunt was amazing. as was rupert friend as albert (much more likeable than wickham!).  i loved victoria's rebellious nature, their first awkward meeting, the relationship between albert and his brother...and now i've fallen back in love with schubert's standchen, featured prominently in the soundtrack.  so romantic.

and and and AND the costumes truly were gorgeous.  once again, i'm glad sandy powell got the oscar :)

her original concepts -

spring fever, and it's not even spring (yet)

some bright summery things that make me happy (and want to go frolic in the sun!):

concentrate. and patience.

listening to the (2005) pride and prejudice soundtrack (rather obviously) reminds me of the movie - well, both of them - the piano scene in the 1995 BBC version (amazing!), and the costumes in the 2005 version.

my favorite definitely has to be the netherfield ball gown.

i seriously have to make this someday.

ahhhh i love the wraparound part!

and her expression...haha

not saying that i'm supporting this random use of expletives, but omg this photo is  super amazing, like a painting.

oscar snazzies

as always, one of my favourite parts of the fashion year.

i was very proud of myself for recognizing rachel mcadam's saab couture dress. (remember this?).  good to know that it looked as lovely off the runway as it did on.

another saab, this time on anna kendrick.  it's too bad it blends in with her skin so much, because the whole draping thing is gorgeous.

cameron diaz's oscar de la renta look was rather beautiful.  the whole shininess thing reminds me of reese witherspoon's vintage dior from 2006 oscars ...well, maybe not really, but anyway.  i loved both dresses!

and i loved loved loved penelope cruz's donna karan gown.  would it be a travesty to say that, one, it kind of reminds me of keira knightley's vera wang dress from the oscars four years ago, and two, that i think i prefer this one?

as for the bad dresses, WHAT WAS CHARLIZE THERON THINKING when she donned this dior dress?

and there's also the question of amanda seyfried's rather...elizabethan?... take on the oscars.  i can't decide whether or not i like the result.  i think i do not.

new media lab!

went to part of the public conference about MIT's new media lab!  Not only did I get to wander around the inside of the building, which is AMAZING, but I got to see Fumihiko Maki speak.  I was surprised to find that he is 81 years old, (yes, he was in grad school in 1953)...and he's kind of funny, too.

anyway, i'm totally planning on going there again sometime and taking lots of pictures.

a place to read.

the ideal place to read?  well, winslow homer's the new novel is one of my FAVES, but i'm not sure i would want to lay on the grass in such a position for hours on end.

in a window seat, perhaps?

but of course it must be one with a view.
